Earlier, throttle bodies were mechanical components, usually actuated by bowden cables. However, nowadays also these components are electronic, to be found within the engine controls.
The term “drive by wire” describes the electric/electronic controlling of a throttle body, in modern vehicles.
Electronic throttle bodies can be divided into the following categories:
One or more potentiometers are measuring the actual position of the throttle, and this process takes place in a redundant system. By default, a combination of two potentiometers are facing each other and their relative positions are measured by mechanical- or hall effect sensors.
